Natalie-Dominique Louw's book launch for "The Professor", held on the 25th of May in Pretoria was a huge success, filled with enlightening conversations, enthusiastic readers, and inspiring moments.
Two questions posed to Natalie during the launch stood out and are worth mentioning:
1. Did you ever experience writer's block, and if yes, how did you deal with it?
Natalie's perspective on writer's block is quite unique. She believes that it occurs when one is overwhelmed with an overload of thoughts and words, causing a loss of perspective on the storyline. Her approach to overcoming it involves stepping away from the writing process entirely to clear her mind. She might work on a painting or take a long walk along the seashore. This method of detachment, she found, helps in bringing clarity. As a former State Law Adviser, she often discovered solutions to difficult legal opinions by engaging in mindless activities, allowing her subconscious to work through the problems. This same technique applies to her creative writing, whether it be short stories or poetry. Natalie emphasizes that this is her personal approach and other writers might handle writer's block differently.
2. When did you first start to write?
Natalie divides her life into two distinct eras: the first from 1955 to 2001 and the second from 2001 to the present. During the first era, she felt she was merely existing, drifting from day to day without any thoughts of writing anything substantial. In 2001, she discovered her true self, the real Natalie-Dominique Louw, and penned her first poem. This marked the beginning of her writing journey. She writes from the heart, not academically, and has self-published two books. "The Professor" is her first work to be published by a publisher, marking a significant milestone in her career.
