OGG welcomes members to 2026 with a strong programme of talks, breakfast meetings and Zoom presentations running from February to April.
Earlier this year, OGG teamed up with top geologists from South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand for a powerful lecture series focused on the Witwatersrand goldfields, once the world’s biggest gold producer.
Key takeaways:
• The current gold model (placer) might not explain everything. A newer model (metamorphic hydrothermal) could offer better answers.
• South Africa still has huge gold potential - but new thinking, research, and better use of old data are needed.
• We must train the next generation of geologists to ask hard questions and challenge outdated models.
• There's a push to preserve 130+ years of mining data that could help unlock future gold finds.
