The Overberg Geoscientists Group (OGG) continues to promote the importance of geology as a foundation for sustainable development, environmental stewardship, and societal well-being in southern Africa.
Since its establishment, OGG has focused on reimagining how geology is understood and shared, looking beyond traditional mining perspectives to highlight geology as a natural heritage and key driver of inclusive development.
Key objectives include:
• Promoting understanding of the fundamental role of geology, soils, minerals, and water in sustaining life.
• Encouraging ongoing learning about Earth processes, including plate tectonics, aquifers, and climate change.
• Highlighting geology’s importance for resource management, infrastructure planning, and hazard mitigation.
• Sharing geoscience knowledge with a broad audience including communities, students, professionals, and decision-makers.
Why geology matters
Geology underpins modern society, from locating water, minerals, and energy resources to supporting agriculture, biodiversity, infrastructure development, and environmental sustainability.
Through field excursions, talks, collaborations, and educational outreach, OGG continues to build awareness of southern Africa’s remarkable geological heritage and its role in shaping our future.
