Local Press and Media Foundation Open Day Hos...
On 4 April 2024, we invited local press and media for an informative Open Day.
Exciting news from the Grootbos Foundation! Our entomology team recently embarked on an enriching journey to the Iziko Museum in Cape Town. There, they delved into the treasure trove of the museum's insect collection, boasting over 1 million pinned insects and a staggering 30 million wet specimens, accumulated over nearly 200 years!
Under the guidance of Dr. Simon van Noort, Head Entomology Curator, and his post-doc Dr. Mikhaila Gordon, our team immersed themselves in the intricacies of insect collection, preparation, curation, and management. Drawing from decades of expertise, they gleaned valuable insights and refined their practices.
But that's not all - our team also explored Iziko's insect exhibitions, gathering inspiration to enhance public awareness of the vital role insects play in our ecosystem. It was an extraordinary privilege to witness firsthand the legacy and dedication preserved within Iziko's walls.
Stay tuned as we continue our mission to promote appreciation and conservation of our insect allies!
