Walker Bay Field Trip Inspires Grootbos Foundation Students

The Horticulture Students enjoyed a local nature/tourism field trip this week in which they got to experience the natural beauty of the Walker Bay region just as visitors to the area do. It is an amazing and eye-opening opportunity to experience their own backyard in a new way with new eyes that enables young people to see opportunities that they may not otherwise notice.

The itinerary included Cape Nature's 'Walker Bay Nature Reserve' and Klipgat Cave, Danger Point Lighthouse, the African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary and Marine Dynamics' Great White House. What a joyful, beautiful treat for the young students who are on a pathway towards mastering skills and gaining employment within a nature-based environment.

Today, the Horticulture Students learnt how to sustainably harvest seeds.

The Green Stewards are on a different pathway to the mastery of a slightly different skill set from the Horticulture Programme. Green Stewards are on a part-time, lighter-touch skills training programme to enable teams of independent workers to become skilled in invasive plant clearing within fynbos ecosystems as well as erosion control, fire management and landscape restoration. These photos were from their monthly excursion designed to instil and inspire conservation values among independent contractors.
