Newsletter #5:17 March 2025
The latest OGG newsletter is out!
The Overberg Geoscientists Group (OGG) has been rocking the local geology scene since 2018, officially becoming a non-profit in 2022. Their mission? To make geology exciting, educational, and accessible to everyone - whether you're a total newbie or a seasoned expert.
Bringing Rocks to Life
OGG doesn’t just talk about rocks - they bring them to the people! They’ve built Earth-Age Displays and Rock Gardens at:
- The African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary (Gansbaai)
- Harold Porter Botanical Gardens (Betty’s Bay)
- These spots showcase billions of years of Earth’s history, turning complex geology into something fun and interactive.
Making Science Fun for All
OGG loves getting the community involved. They host talks, workshops, field trips, and school programs, showing kids and adults alike how geology impacts our daily lives - from the soil under our feet to the water we drink. They’ve also put together 131 YouTube videos for those who want to geek out from home.
Adventures & Discoveries
From hiking in the Cederberg to exploring ancient rock formations along the coast, OGG makes sure geology isn’t just about books - it’s about getting out there and experiencing it.
Thanks to support from groups like Marine Dynamics, SANBI, and local conservationists, OGG keeps growing, making sure the Overberg’s natural history is explored and celebrated.
