Beneath the striking presence of the Sonderberg mountain range and in between the rolling hills of neighbouring farms lies this quaint, countryside town. As part of the N2 highway is also the main street, Riviersonderend’s location in the Overberg region is hard to miss.
From the West
The closest major airport is Cape Town International Airport.
Leave Cape Town by heading East on the N2 highway, passing Somerset West and Strand.
From here, ascend Sir Lowry's Pass to reach the start of the Overberg region. Enjoy spectacular views of the Hottentots Holland Mountains, open landscapes, and natural flora and fauna.
Once you have passed the Botrivier, Houw Hoek and Hermanus off-ramps, you will approach Caledon, which has mineral hot springs, a hospital and a small shopping mall.
After catching a fleeting glimpse of the town, drive another 49.5km until you arrive at the entrance of Riviersonderend.
From the East
George Airport is located at the heart of the Cape Garden Route. If you drive to Riviersonderend from the airport, the most direct way is by taking the N2 highway. On the journey, you will drive past Mossel Bay, a well-known resort town. The scenery includes a majestic view of the Langeberg Mountain Range and its valleys.
Towards Albertinia, you will pass a game lodge with wide open plains where wild animals like elephants, giraffes and springbok live happily.
After Riversdale and Heidelberg, the next major town is Swellendam just off the N2 highway. This tranquil town has everything from restaurants and breakdown services to beauty spas and a clinic.
From this point, it is another 57km until you reach Riviersonderend.
Each route towards Riviersonderend boasts open landscapes, towering mountains, natural forests and the ever-present farmstalls dotted along the way. Whatever direction you travel from, the sights are a real treat and make visiting this Theewaterskloof town in the Overberg worthwhile.
