Preparing for the Wildfire Season

Officially, the Wildfire season st starts on December 1. This is the season during which everybody - whether you are a local resident living on a farm or in a town or just visiting during the festive season - should be “wildfire ready”.

The following tips were forwarded by the manager of the Greater Overberg Fire Protection Agency (goFPA):

1. Do not assume someone else has reported a fire. If you do see smoke or fire, please report it. A quick response is vital to bring wildfires under control.

2. Save important telephone/cell numbers so you can get in touch with the fire departments and emergency services in the Overberg. Also call your neighbours.

3. Know which sources you can trust. In this regard, Louise Wessels warns against sharing information that has not been verified. Inaccurate information, advice, updates and opinions, can make it more difficult for fire fighters to do their job.
