Is De Hoop the Ultimate Family Getaway?

The school holidays are just around the corner and we're sharing our top 5 reasons why De Hoop Collection is the ultimate family getaway.

1) Nature on your Doorstep:

With Eland ambling past the cottages, and rare Bontebok grazing beneath the fig trees, nature really does feel like it's on your doorstep at De Hoop Collection. Kids can keep their eyes peeled for Cape mountain zebras, grey rhebok, baboon, yellow mongoose and ostriches. Did you know: there are 86 mammal species on the reserve and 260 bird species!

2) Room for Everyone:

From self-catering cottages to up-market suites, there's room for everyone at De Hoop Collection. Our De Hoop Villages sleep 6 (4 adults in two double rooms and 2 kiddos in bunk beds), and our Opstal Houses also sleep 6—both options are favourites with families. For those looking to add a level of lux to their experience, De Mond Villa sleeps 10 in 5 en-suite bedrooms and is a fully catered experience.

3) Sun, Sea and Swimming:

From the De Hoop Swimming Pool with its breathtaking views over the vlei, to the prisine rockpools of Koppie Alleen, time outdoors snorkelling or swimming are always a hit with families. Bring your sunblock and your beach towels and make it a summer to remember.

Hot tip: Ask our guides about Hippo Pools for world-class snorkeling

4) ‘Origins of Early Southern Sapiens Behaviour’ Exhibition:

Within the main exhibition, there is a dedicated Children's Interactive Area. This zone is focused on encouraging young kids to interact with archaeology in an engaging way. There are drawing and art activities (kiddos can decorate an ostrich egg!), puzzles, a lightbox, and other fun tools that allow kids to discover more about the region's rich archaeological history.

“The exhibition at De Hoop Collection offers visitors and learners to the De Hoop Nature Reserve the opportunity to enhance their cultural experiences of South Africa. The ‘We Are All One’ message features  strongly throughout the exhibition, pointing to the clear genetic  evidence that all Homo sapiens, people like us, have their origins in  Africa.” - William Stephens, Founder of De Hoop Collection

The Exhibition is open daily and tour times are 9am, 11am, 1pm and 3pm. Booking is required.

Under 18 years of Age R100pp and R200pp for Adults.

NOTE: Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

5) Focus on Connection:

Whether you're sharing a pizza together at the Fig Tree Restaurant, or playing board games in your cottage (remember to pack your favourites!), De Hoop lends itself to a slower pace where families can reconnect and unwind together. Book a guided activity to enjoy, or take a picnic to the beach. Finally read that book you picked up last winter, braai beneath the stars, or take a break from cooking altogether and dine in the restaurant. Go for a walk. Relax. Breathe in that special kind of magic you get from an outdoor holiday with loved ones.
