Events in Arniston

Small coastal towns, especially those so bound to their traditions, normally keep themselves busy with the activitiesof simple life and Arniston is no exception. The busy village keeps itself occupied with the everyday comings and goings of a fishing village. Being part of the Overberg district, the combined social calendar is packed with activities for every member of the family. 

Arniston hosts two of the main events in the Cape Agulhas area and invites one and all to take part. One of them the biggest aeronautical event in South Africa, the other an all-encompassing guided tour of the town and its history.

Breaking away from the simple, down-to-earth living of the locals we head to the skies and beyond with the Overberg Fly In Air Show & Expo. This (aero)-dynamic show has grown into one of the biggest sport and recreational shows in the country and showcases aircraft and products from civilian and professional aircraft owners. The full day program includes live performances by local artists, a wine auction and numerous food and memorabilia stalls to feast upon. The highlight of the day is of course the Air Capability Demonstration and Helicopter Formation Flight that will dazzle the whole family. Be sure to bring your camera along to capture this air spectacular!

Coming back down to earth we follow the hidden trails of the coastline for the second event to be pencilled into our diaries. The biennial event is a great way to discover the scenery and heritage of this beautiful little town. The Denel Overberg Test Range Open Day consists of a guided tour that leads you through the grounds of the range, the adjacent marine reserve and vibrant fields of Fynbos bustling with game and indigenous birds. Also on the agenda are visits to the many historical buildings and grave sites separated by a picnic lunch at the beach. This informative guided tour is not to be missed.

These two wildly popular events are assured to keep you talking about Arniston for the rest of the year, but is not the only happenings in this coastal gem of a town. Following the old tracking manoeuvre of the Khoekoe people that inhabited this area before, keeping your ear to the ground is the best way of keeping up to date with in town happenings.
