Events in Bredasdorp:
Bredasdorp is the heart of Cape Agulhas and it is the most thriving town with greatest variety of businesses. It thus only seems natural that there are several exciting events taking place through the year. These events are generally not only attended by residents but people from the surrounding towns, villages and sometimes afar as well. Don’t be surprised when you discover more than just undulating valleys, verdant pastures and businesses. These events will have you smiling from ear to ear!
There are several annual events and some that take place throughout the year. Jammin’ Nights is a coming together of talented local artists that make the 19th century Victoria Hotel building shake every last Friday of the month with sensational music. From 19:30 until late expect to be entertained and served with warm country hospitality. There is the annual Cape Agulhas Entertainment Carnival which has stalls, fun walks, sport, merry-go-round and live music. It is fun for everyone in one place. Then there are sports festivals like the Radio Overberg 98.4 Netball Day that includes refreshments, prizes, stalls and a cheering crowd. There is the Heartbeat Christian Festival (Hartklop Christusfees) that involves motivational speakers, church services, stalls, sports, Ladies’ tea and Men’s Breakfast every May. Then come the Festive Season and the snail-pace town comes alive with Christmas cheer, hearty food and stalls with hand-made goods that are great gifts to place under the tree.
Bredasdorp is the central hub of Cape Agulhas so it is only natural that it is also the central hub for all the farmers from the surrounding area. Every year around September the Agri Mega Week is held at the Mega Park. It is a meeting place for all stakeholders in farms with a focus on Africa. There are debates and workshops that look at the different aspects and processes on a farm such as milk transformation. Some farmers will bring their livestock or cattle dogs for exhibition while others may flaunt their vintage tractors during a demonstration or even sheer a sheep. Although there is a lot of horticulture talk and the annual ‘farmworker of the year’ award, there is fun for the whole family. There is live music, beer tasting, horse riding shows, a steak house and a lot of other entertainment.
Fynbos is one of the most diverse and endemic types of floral kingdoms in the entire world. There is an annual Cape Floral Kingdom Expo that celebrates the astounding environment surrounding Bredasdorp. The expo is held in the Mega Park around August and displays more than 1 000 species. There are talks ranging from the biodiversity to endemism of fynbos, Renosterveld, Fynbos thicket, Afromontane forest and succulent Karoo. The expo is open to any role players (local or international) involved in the conservation and commercial industry of fynbos.
Voet van Afrika is a marathon that will test any athlete’s endurance as the longest race is 42km. It has been dubbed the ‘toughest race with the warmest heart’ as you traipse over some of the most picturesque landscapes through the Overberg. There are other races of varying lengths for the less determined of 21km, 10km and a 4km Fun Run that takes place the day before the actual race. The race ends at the Bredasdorp Agri Mega Park with physiotherapists waiting with strong healing hands and an endless supply of refreshments. For those cycling enthusiasts the Potberg MTB Challenge is right around the corner as the track goes through Potberg, De Hoop Nature Reserve and Breede River. There are cycling and running challenges of all levels so it is also fit for the whole family.
