Shared Expression & Storytelling

Gansveer is a poetry group in Gansbaai, where words come to life through shared expression and storytelling. The group celebrates multilingual creativity, including Afrikaans and other languages, with English serving as the shared language to ensure inclusivity and clarity. Gansveer focuses on expression rather than perfection, offering a judgment-free space where every voice is valued equally and ideas flow through writing, reading, discussion, and listening. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month, with venues rotating and confirmed within the group. Additional activities are arranged throughout the year. Anyone with an interest in writing or shared storytelling is welcome to attend, and a simple sign-up process is required to ensure the group is a good fit for everyone.

About

Gansveer is a creative haven where poets, writers, and thinkers come together to explore the power of language and expression.

Members are encouraged to share, listen, and experiment with their creativity in a supportive environment where all voices are treated equally.

History

History

Gansveer’s first official meeting was held on 9 September 2023.

The vision was sparked by Susan Van Zyl, who imagined a gathering where poets and poetry lovers could come together to share words, emotion, and creativity under one roof.

What started as a small gathering quickly grew into a monthly tradition, with the first Tuesday of each month becoming a meaningful date for the community.

As the group developed, so did its sense of identity. Each meeting became a space where ideas could be shared freely, and where creativity was valued above performance.

Over time, a strong sense of connection formed between members, shaped by recurring gatherings, shared expression, and mutual encouragement.

How it Works

How it Works

Gansveer meets on every second Tuesday of the month.

Here’s how it works:

1. Anyone with an interest in writing or shared storytelling is welcome to attend, and a simple sign-up process is required to ensure the group is a good fit for everyone.

2. Sessions are hosted at rotating venues, often offered by members who volunteer their space and hospitality.

3. Each gathering is flexible in format. Some sessions focus on reading and sharing written work, while others include discussion, prompts, or creative exercises.

4. Participation is open to both writers and listeners, with no obligation to present work to attend.

5. A closed WhatsApp group is used to share session details, written pieces, and updates. Content shared within the group remains private, allowing members to use their work in external competitions or platforms if desired.

6. Visitors from outside the Gansbaai area are welcome, with attendance of at least one session per year expected to remain active in the group.

Events

Gansveer hosts events throughout the year.

A favourite is an annual end-of-year creative challenge that highlights the work produced throughout the year.

This event often includes prizes and recognition for contributions, celebrating creativity, consistency, and participation within the group.

Sponsorship opportunities are welcomed to support the annual prize-giving and encourage continued creative development within the community.

Additional special sessions may be arranged throughout the year depending on themes, opportunities, or member initiatives.
