Using Technology to Strengthen Local Business

Technology is no longer something reserved for big companies in big cities. Today, small businesses in our local communities can greatly benefit from using even the simplest, most affordable digital tools. Technology enables us to work smarter, enhance customer service, expand our reach to new clients, and operate more efficiently, even from small towns like ours. By utilising basic digital platforms, such as WhatsApp Business, Facebook, Instagram, online payments, cloud storage, and digital booking systems, small businesses can save time, increase visibility, and make it easier for customers to conduct business with them. Technology allows us to advertise at low cost, communicate instantly, and build trust through real-time updates and consistent engagement. In addition, having clear online information helps visitors and tourists plan ahead, which is especially important in towns where tourism drives economic survival.

Technology also helps businesses collaborate more effectively. Networks like our local business community can share information faster, coordinate marketing campaigns, streamline referrals, and create joint offers that support local economic growth. Digitally connected businesses also tend to innovate quickly and adapt better when markets or circumstances change. For instance, if the weather suddenly turns bad and tourists stay indoors, the restaurant can post a “storm day winter warmer special” immediately. They can promote it within minutes on social media, update their Google hours to stay open later, and even send direct messages to returning customers using WhatsApp Business broadcasts. That boosts seating and revenue on a day that might have been quiet.

Or, if there is a sudden spike in visitors due to a holiday long weekend, they can increase pre-orders, arrange extra staff sooner, and send out a notice early so locals know to book.

Importantly, technology is not about replacing people; it is about empowering people. It gives entrepreneurs more control, insight, and opportunities. Training, support, and continuous learning will remain vital, especially for small business owners who may feel overwhelmed by the rapid pace of digital change. By investing in technology skills and embracing digital tools, our local business sector can become more competitive, more sustainable, and more resilient for the future.
