This fruitful valley forms part of the Cape Country Meander and is quite the popular spot for farming with various fruits. There is however much more to this colourful town, here are 11 facts you might not know about Villiersdorp:

  1. The settlement that gave origin to Villiersdorp was only established in 1843.
  2. The town is named after the original farmer and owner of the land, Pieter de Villiers.
  3. The town became a municipality in 1855 which spawned development in the town.
  4. Villiersdorp is home to the Theewaterskloof Dam, the 7th largest dam in South Africa.
  5. The town plays host to one of the country’s biggest music festivals, Synergy Live.
  6. The town and valley is known for producing apples, apricots and pears.
  7. The Theewaterskloof Golf Club 9-hole course is rated one of the top courses in South Africa by Golfer’s Digest.
  8. The town is home to a Tractor and Engine Museum.
  9. The Theewaterskloof Dam was built in the late 1970’s.
  10. The tarring of the Main Road took place in 1936.
  11. In 1922 a moskonfyt factory was built in the town – supposedly the only one in the world!
