Suurbraak is a town in the Overberg region just east of Swellendam along the N2 highway and the R324, at the southern end of the Tradouw Pass. The word “Suurbraak” or “sour brake” refers to the thick racket ferns that grow in the area. Also located at the foot of the Langeberg mountains, Suurbraak was known as “Xairu” by the Attequa tribe who lived in the area before European settlement. “Xairu” means “beautiful” or “paradise” in the Xairu language and Suurbraak is considered one of the most beautiful towns in the Western Cape.
With many restored historical buildings, Suurbraak is a town with a rich history. This history began with the arrival of the London Missionary Society who established a mission station in the area in 1812. Visitors can go on guided walks of the town and surrounding area and visit the mission station as well as the original church, parsonage and school.
Suurbraak is also known for its geological formations which include the Wonder Kloof. The village is also quite popular with hikers as several walks can be done in the surrounding area. These walks/hikes include a river walk that runs parallel to the main road, the Oude Molen trail that takes you to a natural rock pool and the Fynbos Route which is famous for its proteas and the view of the town from the mountainside.
