Theewaterskloof

Theewaterskloof

Theewaterskloof occupies the area between the Riversonderend Mountains to the North and encompasses Theewaterskloof Dam. The Kleinrivier and Kogelberg Mountains form it’s most southern boarder while stretching as far as the Hottentots-Holland Mountains in the West.

Administratively located in the Theewaterskloof Local Municipality, the Theewaterskloof Dam is an earth-fill type dam located on the Sonderend River. It was established in 1978 and forms a major component of the Western Cape Water Supply System and serves municipal, industrial and irrigation purposes.  The dam is linked to Franschhoek’s Berg River dam by an 18-kilometer tunnel inside the Franschhoek Mountains, where both dams get their water. With a capacity of 438 million cubic meters of water when full, the sheer size of the Theewaterskloof Dam puts into perspective the amount of water that can run off just one mountain.
