Discover the Story Beneath Our Feet with the Overberg Geoscientists Group (OGG)
Since 2018, the Overberg Geoscientists Group has been dedicated to sharing the incredible geological heritage of the Overberg and surrounding regions. From ancient rocks and minerals to soils, water systems, caves, dunes and the evolution of our landscape - OGG brings earth science to life for all ages.
What We Do
• School and Youth Outreach - Hands-on geology sessions, rock collections, posters, outdoor excursions and learning experiences for pre-primary to high school learners.
• Community Education - Talks, workshops and guided walks for educators, families, and anyone curious about the world around them.
• Geological Displays - Earth-Age and Rock Gardens at the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary (Gansbaai) and Harold Porter Botanical Gardens (Betty’s Bay).
• Excursions and Field Trips - Regular outings across the Western and Southern Cape, Cederberg, Karoo and coastal sites like De Kelders and Quoin Point.
• Workshops and Symposia - From local geoheritage events to diamond and mine excursions, international fieldtrips and large-scale conferences.
• YouTube Learning Library - 140+ geology videos and presentations accessible to everyone.
Our Mission
To inspire curiosity, transfer knowledge, mentor future geoscientists, and promote the sustainable understanding of our natural resources, landscapes, and geological history.
