The productive town of Grabouw in the Elgin Valley is well-known for its farming of apples and pears and is quickly gaining momentum in the outdoor adventures sector due to the very popular Cape Canopy Tours. But did you know about these fun facts:

  1. The town of Grabouw was built on a farm called Grietjiesgat, obtained by a painter in 1856.
  2. The town was named after the German town the painter, Wilhelm Langschmidt was born in.
  3. Grabouw/Elgin is home to the famous soft drink Appletizer.
  4. The Molteno family sparked the growth of the farming in Grabouw in the early 1920s which lead to the valley becoming the largest single fruit exporter in the world.
  5. The Valley falls under the Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve.
  6. The Valley is home to a number of wine farms ranging from large estates to boutique wineries.
  7. Over 40% of the apples grown in Grabouw/Elgin is exported, including Golden Delicious and Granny Smith varieties.
  8. The town is also well-known for its flowers, especially roses which has given birth to the Elgin Open Gardens Festival.
  9. The surrounding area offers various top-notch hiking and mountain biking trails.
  10. The nearby farm, Oak Valley, is recognised as the first commercial producer of deciduous fruit in the region.
