Birdwatching opportunities in Grabouw and the Elgin Valley are made incredibly easy, thanks to the abundance of natural elements the area has to offer. Surrounded by several prolific nature reserves, farmlands, protected areas and open spaces, this region in Theewaterskloof, provides a paradise for feathered creatures. The untouched and wild foliage and mountainscapes as a backdrop, make the greater Grabouw the ideal environment for birds of all shapes and sizes. This twittering abundance is much to the delight of birdwatchers, ornithologists and visitors. There are many outdoor adventures in Grabouw / Elgin that simply must be experienced! Adrenalin seekers can tackle one of the high-rise canopy tours or take a spin up the mountain on a quad biking adventure. Alternatively, simply taking in the sights in a quiet area, while you listen to the wild birds fly overhead, is a refreshing outdoor adventure on its own. Grabouw / Elgin is one of the many areas in the Western Cape that make up the Cape Floral Kingdom. With the Kogelberg mountains surrounding the town, which form a portion of the Kogelberg Biosphere, it is not only considered the home of thousands of people but a haven for incredible birdlife too. 

This protected area in Theewaterskloof supports all seven species of birds that are endemic to fynbos, namely the Cape siskin, protea seedeater, Cape sugarbird, orange-breasted sunbird, fynbos buttonquail, Cape rock-jumper and the Victorin's warbler.

In addition to your self-guided birding adventure, you can find several local tour guides who can help point you in the right direction. These guides will take you on a birding experience through the thick vegetation, to try and catch a glimpse of the exceptional specimens. From fork-tailed drongos and Cape clapper larks to common swifts and marsh warblers in the summertime, Grabouw and the surrounding Elgin Valley is the place to see them all.
