A visit to Pringle Bay and Rooi Els is all about having outdoor adventures. From hiking to swimming, surfing to fishing and even white water rafting in the winter – this little village and the surrounding areas are full of activities to try.
There are several beaches in the area where the whole family can have fun. You can swim in the protected waters of the Buffels River mouth or the Rooi Els lagoon. These are safe areas, especially if you have young kids who want to explore the beach.
A great place for plenty of water sports is just off the Pringle Bay beach. You can launch kayaks and stand up paddles from the water’s edge or hit the waves with your surfboard. If you want to head a bit further out to sea, you can launch a boat from the Maasbaai slipway on the other end of the village. There are several local charters that offer boat rides to visitors.
When visiting the area, it’s definitely worth taking time away from the ocean and heading out to explore the mountains. There are numerous hiking trails around the village itself that range from quite difficult and strenuous to easy enough for the whole family and your dog. Just ask at the tourist information in the centre of town for a map. If you’re staying in one of the local guest houses, they’ll be able to show you where the hikes start.
You can also head up into the mountains through the Harold Porter Botanical Gardens or the Kogelberg Nature Reserve. Entrances to these are only 10 minutes and 25 minutes away from Pringle Bay, respectively.
For those who want to really get their adrenaline pumping, there are some great outdoor activities in the Kogelberg Nature Reserve aside from hiking. The mountain bike trail here is considered to be quite the challenge. In the winter, you can go white water rafting down the Palmiet River within the reserve. This is only for those with experience though.
Pringle Bay and Rooi Els is full of outdoor adventures that are great for both families to experience together and for adrenaline junkies who are looking for a new thrill.
