A year programme in painting with an emphasis on the sourcing and exploitation of personal imagery.

The programme is designed and presented by Dr Greg Kerr and four practical workshops will be held in each of Johannesburg, Cape Town (Overstrand) and The Crags (near Plett). Students can choose which venue to attend. Before and between workshops, online tuition is given on a continuous basis, using the interactive platform, SLACK. It will be possible for students to enrol for individual workshops.

Fees for the year programme are R14,000 and for individual workshops R3,800.

The illustrations above are small pieces done by 2022 students Sonja Kastner and Rix Wellmann in which a technical process was used to generate novel images. The first exercises in the Friendly Strangers programme will expand on such processes, and the programme will then develop visual, conceptual and technical strategies for the production of a body of oil paintings that are the result of the students’ individual initiatives, tastes and inclinations.

About Greg Kerr

Greg Kerr was born in Johannesburg in 1949 and has pursued a career in art teaching since 1973. He was Associate Head of the Department of Art Education at the Johannesburg College of Education, Director of Fine Art at the Technikon Witwatersrand and Professor in Fine Arts at the University of Stellenbosch.

Since 2001 he has run his own art school, influencing and supporting hundreds of adult art students. Greg has had more than 25 solo exhibitions of his paintings and drawings since his first in 1982 and is represented in a number of public and private art collections, always pairing his creative work with academic concerns. He holds degrees in English Literature, Art History and Fine Art. In 1985 he gained a PhD in Critical Language. His teaching philosophy is centred on the “existential” model which assumes that students must be guided in all the useful skills, but ultimately given the tools and the confidence to establish their own unique expressive visual language. Coupled with enquiry into relevant aspects of art theory, the instruction allows for a healthy challenge of preconceptions and stereotypes and demands a vigorous response from the participants. Expect the unexpected!
