BioBlitz in Baardskeerdersbos

Help us to put Baardskeerdersbos on the bio-map. Overstrand is joining the Great Southern Bioblitz. Spend the weekend in Baardskeerdersbos and join us on our farm for a walk. Accommodation is available.

We'll check the secret location of one of only a few populations of the Koudeberg aloe to see if it is already in bloom. This rocky outcrop also offers a wide range of species. Then we'll head up the mountain to explore the southern slope. The Aspalathus are already starting to turn the landscape yellow, we'll still find Protea speciosa, Leucospermum prostratum, early blue Disa, Protea longifolia at the plato and looking closer a number of Fabaceae and many more.

Friday

From 14:00 check in at the accommodation.

19:00 - Meet at OuSkool restaurant, Strandveld Street, Baardskeerdersbos. Enjoy a wine pairing with traditional cuisine and 4 wines. Glen and Sarien to present a short slideshow of their travels, how they came to live on the farm and a bit of background on the veld you are going to explore on Saturday.

Cash bar available.

The kitchen is open until 20:00 - the pairing presents sufficient for a modest meal.

Saturday

Breakfast from 8:00.

09:15 - Meet at the farm entrance. High clearance vehicle required. If you do not have transport, please indicate so that we can arrange it.

We will start our walk at the entrance gate and work our way up the mountain to the “plateau”. It will all depend on how fast we walk and our progress as we will be taking photos.

Have a break under the pine trees.

You are responsible for your own snacks and drinks for the walk. An eco-toilet is available here and some drinking water.

Wear proper shoes and clothes. Remember it is snake “season”.

We will then return on a different path back to the entrance gate.

Plan to be back at the entrance gate no later than 15:00.

Meet back at the restaurant where we will have a section reserved to relax, share our observations and discuss identification.

19:00 - Meet for the braai. Food ready at 19:30.

Sunday

Breakfast at your leisure from 09:00. Should you wish to have breakfast earlier, kindly arrange it.

You are now free to explore Baardskeerdersbos or join any of the other Bioblitz excursions organized in the area.
