Businesses in Bredasdorp
When first entering this docile town one would hardly expect Bredasdorp to be the hub of Cape Agulhas. However, with everything from wheat silos, franchise stores, a hospital, schools and a surfeit of varying businesses, it most certainly is the business sector of the southernmost region of Africa. Surrounded by quaint farm towns like Napier and slow-paced coastal towns like Struisbaai and Agulhas, Bredasdorp is the place where farmers and townsfolk come to do their serious shopping and administration.
You don’t need to worry about leaving behind the convenience of modern amenities in this small town. Most needs can be met with one of the many shops that line the streets of the centre of town. The surrounding dorpe are true to the small town nature and feature only home-baked take-aways and freshly caught fish. Bredasdorp however has several franchise stores. There are 4 large petrol stations, banks, ATMs, two well-known take-away joints and several big name supermarkets. It is all about being away from the big city but never being far from convenience.
Most of the businesses are situated in the centre of town, most especially on the two main roads running parallel to each other. Although the centre is awash with activity and businesses, it is a quick drive outwards and you will find quiet suburban areas that take advantage of the area’s tranquillity and natural beauty. If you take the R319 heading out of town you will come across the wheat silos that stand like monuments to the farmer’s efforts of the surrounding area. In the same direction is an industrial area where you can find some shops and small factories.
For all the well-known shops and brands that you can spot, there are an equal amount of small intimate businesses. The charm of family-owned farm stalls, quaint cafés, antique stores and galleries hosting local artists are artfully hidden between the larger shops. One can walk into the customary small talk and friendly gestures of local business owners. Locals are greeted by name and tourists with welcoming smiles.
For a bit of retail therapy during your holiday Bredasdorp has several options. You can either browse the aisles of the couple of chain stores or, with a determined eye, search through the china shops for a great bargain. Besides clothing Bredasdorp boasts some incredible shops when it comes to decorating your home. From candle factories, pottery shops, furniture stores and material shops you will be spoilt for choice and have an array of hand-made goods to bring new life to your home. The galleries have a great selection by local artists that will add a certain savoir-vivre to your house.
For many holiday-makers, especially families, it is always a concern that there will be medical attention available if something does happen. Expecting the best but preparing for the worst is made easy in Bredasdorp. There is a hospital, private dentists, optometrists, private GP, a pharmacy and police station. The worry is omitted from your holiday as everything is already prepared. However, we hope that you won’t have to make a trip to these emergency spots!
