Grabouw

Grabouw

The general district is referred to as Elgin named after the farm Glen Elgin, but the town Grabouw is the centre of the locality that is generally referred to as Elgin or the Elgin Valley. Grabouw was historically a stopover town on the ox-wagon route from Cape Town to Caledon and real economic growth only began when the Molteno family began to farm apples on their farm Glen Elgin, and pioneered various cold storage and farming techniques. Other farmers such as Sir Antonie Viljoen from Oak Valley were also instrumental in establishing Grabouw as a single fruit-exporting region.

As a commercial centre for a large agricultural district, Grabouw provides services to support farmers throughout the valley. Here you can find shops, banks and a variety of businesses. In the town itself, there are also a variety of accommodation options as well as beauty salons and clothing stores. Farms, wine estates and nature reserves surround the town and there are a number of restaurants, farm stalls, schools and churches in the area.
