All Aboard - Destination Elgin Railway Market!

If you are always on the lookout for exciting ways to explore the beautiful Overberg, there can be no better way to create memorable journeys than by vintage steam train, courtesy of the Ceres Rail Company!

A Round-Trip Journey Back In Time

Your round-trip from Cape Town to Elgin Valley starts on Cape Town’s Foreshore at the Harbour Bridge Platform. After departure, the train makes its way from the Mother City and its surrounds past Somerset West, then climbs Sir Lowry’s Pass on one of the steepest railways in South Africa. Cresting the peak of the pass, the train then snakes its way down into the lush Elgin Valley before arriving at the Elgin Railway Market.

Train Amenities Ensure Complete Enjoyment

Apart from the magnificent scenery that ensures ever-changing landscapes and the creation of natural eye candy at any given window in each compartment, The Ceres Rail Company provides various train amenities to ensure you have the very best time. While bringing your picnic hamper or cooler box is not permitted, the train has a stunning dining car with a delicious menu as well as a fully-licensed bar with all your favourites. Both accept cash and cards.

Elgin Railway Market

On arrival in apple country, the train disembarks at the Elgin Railway Market where passengers can enjoy a few hours at the steampunk-inspired market venue with its bounty of stalls, food, drink and entertainment. This market is a treat in itself and you will soon be making plans for a return journey to Grabouw so you can spend a few days enjoying the vibe.

Preserving South African Rail Heritage

The first steam-train line in the Cape was completed in 1862 and ran from Cape Town to Eerste River. Part of Ceres Rail Company’s mission is to help preserve and promote South African Rail Heritage, which involves restoring and refurbishing old locomotives and coaches. The company currently operates Class 19D locomotives #3321 and #3322 and Class 19B locomotive #1412.

Book Your Ticket So You Don’t Miss The Train

Tickets start at about R625 per person and increase depending on where you sit on the train, how much privacy you want and the level of comfort you need. Group bookings can be arranged and the train is also available for exclusive use, making it ideal for unique functions.
