Kleinmond Estuary Wild Horses
Have you spotted the Kleinmond horses along the estuary?
These feral horses, also known as the Rooisand horses, have roamed the Bot River Estuary for over a century. Their exact origins remain a mystery, but some may descend from horses brought to the Cape during the Anglo-Boer War, and others from 19th-century Boland wagon horses.
Adapted perfectly to life in the wetlands, these resilient horses graze in shallow water, thrive in muddy terrain, and help maintain the estuary’s delicate ecosystem. But with urban growth and habitat loss, their future is uncertain.
