Driving along the Whale Coast Route you’ll pass the peaceful coastal towns which have made this such a popular holiday destination and just before you turn onto the R43 to head to Hermanus, you’ll find Kleinmond. This busy little town is well-known for its prolific biodiversity. 



Here are 10 facts you might not know about Kleinmond:


  1. Kleinmond falls under the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve.

  2. The first sign of community was only seen in the mid-1800s in the Kleinmond area.

  3. The Kleinmond Lagoon and beach is a popular spot for holiday-makers to lounge on the beach, play in the shallow waters and canoe down the lagoon.

  4. Next to the Lagoon, you can find the famous Preekboom which served a s a meeting point for churches in the early 1900s.

  5. On the Hermanus side of Kleinmond, you’ll find the Rooisand Nature Reserve where wild horses roam free.

  6. Kleinmond holds 2 golf courses – one located at the foot of the Kogelberg Mountains and the other at Arabella Hotel & Spa.

  7. The Kleinmond Harbour was declared an industrial area in 1954.

  8. Development and infrastructure in Kleinmond only really took off in 1966 when tar roads and municipal buildings were built.

  9. Kleinmond is home to the Palmiet River which is popular for river rafting and tubing.

  10. According to the tales of William Paterson, this area still saw bontebok, buffalo, zebra and eland roam around freely in the early 1700s.
