History of Bredasdorp: 1963 Old Photo
Bredasdorp has come a long way since this photo was taken in 1963.
Founded in 1838 by Michiel van Breda, a key figure in South Africa’s merino sheep industry, Bredasdorp is home to iconic landmarks, such as the Anglican Church, designed by Sophie Grey in 1861 and the Dutch Reformed Church, completed in 1911.
History lovers can also visit the Shipwreck Museum, known for its collection of shipwreck artefacts and bottles.
The 1980s brought further development, with the Denel Overberg Test Range and the South African Air Force’s Test Flight and Development Centre established near Arniston, shaping Bredasdorp into the town it is today.
