Weekends in Greyton

Greyton is around 2 hour’s drive from Cape Town International Airport and truly is a haven for anyone looking to have a great weekend getaway. Located in the Overberg at the foot of the Riviersonderend Mountain Range, this village offers the opportunity to unwind in quaint country-side cottages while taking relaxing walks down oak-lined lanes.

That being said, don’t be fooled by the relaxing atmosphere, this tranquil village also provides access to some of the greatest adventures available in the Western Cape. It’s highly recommended that you enjoy amazing outdoor activities as well as rejuvenate with some of the town’s most laid-back pastimes. These are some of our favourite Greyton weekend attractions.

Don’t miss the Saturday morning market with home-baked goods, locally-grown fresh produce and all the makings of a traditional country fête. If you’re staying in self-catering accommodation for the weekend this is the best place to stock up on delicious foods and treats. One of the big draw cards for Greyton is the tasty array of desserts, cakes, local meats, artisanal cheese and chocolate as well as boutique wines produced in the region.

The surrounding mountainside and forests provides some of the best mountain biking, running and hiking trails available in South Africa. If you’d like to casually cycle around the side streets of Greyton you can hire bikes in town. MTB buffs will appreciate the hard work by the local enthusiasts to clear and mark many kilometres of track for your enjoyment. There are also historical hiking trails that will take any nature lover’s breathe away in terms of views and wildlife. You can choose your routes depending on how much time you’d like to spend out on these trails, anywhere from 2 hours to overnight trips are available.

The Greyton community is made up of incredibly enthusiastic artists and creative circles. It truly is home to crafters and artisans who often host weekend exhibitions, installations, talks, demo’s and even workshops. People from all over the Overberg are drawn to these events and taking a stroll through the town to view various art galleries. In fact, there is now even an annual Creative Arts Festival that occurs every September when the wildflowers are in full bloom all around Greyton.

Greyton is a great weekend getaway spot for almost any kind of traveller. From families to couples, as well as individuals looking for some time away, there really is something for everyone.
