Overstrand Firefighter claims podium at SA’s Toughest Challenge
Overstrand Municipality firefighters showed strength, grit and determination as they took on the Toughest Firefighter Alive Southern Africa Open Championship 2025, held in George over the weekend (from 9 to 11 October).
This event brought together firefighters from across South Africa, Botswana, and Namibia to compete in both individual and team events.
The competition tested participants through a range of physical challenges, including obstacle courses, dummy drags, wall climbs, tower runs, and hose hoisting.
In the spotlight was Jason Griffiths, who delivered an outstanding performance in the highly competitive 18–29 year age group, securing a 3rd place podium finish in the individual category.
The other three individual competitors were Marchello Joemat, Cecil Joemat and Fezile Klaas.
Representing Overstrand Fire Services with distinction, the mixed team secured a commendable 4th place finish. Team members Willene Thompson, Tyrol Mackenzie, Suzaan Louw, and Phillip Goodman showed great teamwork.
And as they say, behind every team is a reliable support crew, and Overstrand’s firefighters were backed by dedicated team members who kept spirits high and operations running smoothly. S Coert, K Heneke and T Swartz provided essential assistance throughout the event.
Adam Mars served as this year’s team leader, helping guide the group and encouraging a strong sense of teamwork throughout the event.
Although the challenge has now concluded, the experience continues to build camaraderie and unity - qualities that are important in emergency services and community safety.
Overstrand Executive Mayor, Archie Klaas said the Municipality is exceptionally proud of its team’s performance, and especially of Jason Griffiths' outstanding 3rd place finish. The municipality salutes all participants and support staff who represented Overstrand with professionalism and heart.
Bring it on - Overstrand Municipality is ready!
