Tourism Month Ideal Opportunity To Explore Your Own Backyard

The Western Cape Minister of Finance and Economic Opportunities, Mireille Wenger, met the Overstrand Deputy Mayor, Cllr Lindile Ntsabo, Director of Local Economic Development, Soli Madikane, and representatives of the tourism industry on Thursday, 15 September 2022, in support of Tourism Month.

As tourism is such an important part of the Western Cape’s economy, Minister Wenger has been visiting tourism attractions across the Western Cape to highlight the immense beauty and many tourism offers in the Province. She stopped in Hermanus en-route from the NAMPO agricultural show and exhibition hosted in Bredasdorp.

The Minister visited the Whale House and De Wet’s Huis Photo Museums, Hermanus Fynarts Sculpture on the Cliffs public exhibition at Gearing's Point, a newly opened restaurant at the Hermanus Waterfront and the stalls at Market Square. The sunny weather and multiple whales in the vicinity of Hermanus Old Harbour made for excellent whale watching.

Dr Els Vermeulen of the Whale Unit of the University of Pretoria's Mammal Research Institute based in Hermanus and the Dean of the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, Professor Barend Erasmus, also joined the Minister in a brief discussion on the latest Southern Right Whale Survey and the comparison with previous years.
