Darwin Celebrated in Simon’s Town - A Day of Science and Tribute
On Sunday, 20 April 2025, the Simon’s Town Jetty became a place of celebration as a bronze bust of Charles Darwin was unveiled. The event was led by Professor Mike Bruton and supported by the City of Cape Town, local scientists, and Darwin’s great-great-grandson, Andrew Darwin.
The historic tall ship Oosterschelde, part of the global Darwin200 voyage, was open for tours, and the day included speeches from local leaders, geologists, and artists. New plaques were also added to the Sea Point Contact, where Darwin's interest in geology deepened during his 1836 visit to Cape Town.
The day ended with a performance of Darwin. A Curious Mind, a new play celebrating Darwin’s journey from curious observer to scientific pioneer.
