First Teachers College in South Africa Genadendal 1838
Did you know that South Africa’s first teachers’ college was actually in Genadendal, not Wellington, as many people believe?
On 12 September 1838, long before teacher training colleges became common in South Africa, the Genadendal Training College opened its doors. That is nearly 60 years before Wellington’s college in 1896, making it the first formal teacher training institution in South Africa. During its 90-year legacy, the college produced 236 teachers, many of whom went on to influence education across the region.
Today, the historic building forms part of the Genadendal Mission Museum, declared a South African National Cultural Treasure in 1991.
