Presentation Synopsis:
Discover the dramatic history of sea level changes along the Hermanus Cliff Path and southern Cape coastline. John Blaine will delve into how the rocks we see today were once submerged and how geological records from the past, including upheavals and de-glaciation, have shaped our current landscape. Learn about the ongoing cycles of sea-level change that began approximately 500 million years ago and the significant events over the past 120,000 years.
Additional Opportunity:
Following the presentation, if there is enough interest, a short excursion will be held along the Cliff Path between Gearings Point and the New Harbour to visit key sites discussed by John Blaine.

John Blaine - Short CV:
John Blaine, a UCT graduate with an MSc in Geology, has an extensive career in mineral exploration spanning over 34 years with Falconbridge and various exploration companies. His work has taken him from Namibia to Canada, Greenland, and beyond. Now retired and living in Hermanus, John is passionate about sharing his knowledge and highlighting the geological wonders of our region.
