Fish Markets in Hermanus

The not-so-sleepy town of Hermanus can be found near Walker Bay in the Overberg and forms an integral part of the Cape Whale Coast Route along the R42. This seaside village is approximately 120km from the Cape Town International Airport and has become a popular destination for vacationers and foodies alike. People are drawn to the fresh, delicious seafood in Hermanus and there are several notable fish markets where you can pick up incredible ingredients for dishes inspired by the ocean.

Hermanus has become a hub of organic revival with many tourists and locals enjoying traditional and exotic cuisine here. There are a few markets where fish and other seafood are the highlights of the day. For example the Hermanus Country Market is heaving with fresh seafood as well as organic produce and stalls offering home-style snacks, treats and desserts. Keep an eye out for the blackboard menus sprinkled throughout the venue, these announce the wide variety of cuisine available at each stall – from seared salmon to delicious breakfasts served with local favourites like “moer koffie” (traditional coffee).

If you get the chance try to stop in at the Hermanuspietersfontein Winery Market which is a bit more intimate but just as cheerful. Enjoy fresh-from-the-sea fish, mussels, calamari, prawns, oysters and more! You’ll also be able to taste delicate pastries, gourmet coffee and artisanal chocolate. It’s also the perfect opportunity to feast on locally produced wine and cheese.

If you’re looking for a restaurant that specialises in specifically serving dishes with ingredients that have been freshly harvested that same day, then visit the Quayside Cabin in the harbour. Fish is delivered here daily and you’ll be able to get kabeljou, kingklip, tuna and salmon as well as feast on platefuls of prawns, mussels and calamari. Also drop in at the Lusitania Seafoods fish market at the entrance of the harbour if you’d like to get your own fresh fish to take home for braais and bakes.

Hermanus truly offers a feast of flavours for visitors and locals to enjoy. All of the fish shops, fishmongers and fish markets offer fresh delicacies every day; from raw seafood at the fish counter for your own dishes to battered, fried fish and chips as well as a succulent selections of sushi. Every dish can be paired with a remarkable wine, more often than not one from the local, nearby wine estates. Visit this Overberg treasure and enjoy fresh seafood, tasty wines and an elegant, lively atmosphere.
