Saturday | Sunday Weekend Tasting: Oldenburg
This weekend we will be tasting the < CL° White and <CL° Red from Oldenburg Vineyards, in Stellenbosch. The entire Oldenburg wine range is amazing, and the CL° Series was made to show thier 'cooler' side. All notes are from their website:
< CL° is the concept range in the Oldenburg Vineyards stable. A concept means the representation of an idea. For us, the < CL° range represents a key part of the Oldenburg Vineyards story: that we are cooler than Stellenbosch (in terms of climate).
There are 8 Natural Elements that make our corner of the Banghoek Valley a special place to make wine, and three of these elements (the mountain ranges, the elevation and the winds) influence the coolness of our valley. This cooler climate elevates the quality of our grapes and wine significantly, through slower and more even ripening. Cooler climate, cooler wines.
< CL° White: Simultaneously a talking point and a statement, this wine presents with a lovely lemon yellow colour in the glass. On the nose it is abundantly fruity, with hints of passionfruit, guava, a grapefruit-like pithiness and vivid aromas of freshly cut grass and green pepper. The palate is bold, showcasing a floral side, tangerines, pears and green apples. The wine delivers a generous splash of acidity, and has a harmonious and balanced finish (54% Chardonnay, 46% Chenin Blanc; 9 181 bottles).
< CL° Red: This lively wine shows a ruby red colour in the glass. The wine displays bright aromas of red fruits, including redcurrants, raspberries and red cherries. The Merlot contributes a depth of savoury character in the form of tomato leaf, tomato paste and hints of olive tapenade. On the palate there is a vibrant showing of plums, chocolate, a hint of vanilla and cedar, alongside dried leaves, fennel and violets. A surprisingly weighty mid-palate with chalky tannins, a zesty acidity and a juicy red fruit finish concludes this delightful 2020 Blend (77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot; 9 844 bottles).

There should always be an empty parking space in the corner next to our shop, but if not please feel free to stop directly in front of our shop while you are with us - this will save you time driving around looking for a parking space.

Have you ever heard about a great wine but could never find a bottle for yourself (to share with friends, of course)? Well, the team at Wine & Company do all the hard work for you! We visit wine farms and attend tastings to find, taste, and then stock wine from the smaller Estates and independent winemakers who buy grapes and produce outstanding wine under their own labels – much the same as the French negociants have been doing for centuries. Given that these winemakers make wine in such small quantities, sometimes just a single barrel, their wine will never be found on the shelves of the major retailers, but only in specialist shops like Wine & Company on High Street, Hermanus.
In addition to the great selection of well-known wines and MCC's, we also stock local craft gin and beer, French Champagne, Belgian Ales as well as whisky and other spirits. Wine & Company (established in 1998 by Bartho Eksteen) has a well-earned reputation for stocking hard-to-find small-batch wines and we strive to continue this great tradition. If you purchase a bottle of wine from us and it is faulty we will gladly replace the bottle and return the faulty wine to the winemaker.
