Hermanus 1955 Old Photo

Hermanus has come a long way since this photo was taken in 1955.

Originally known as Hermanuspietersfontein, Hermanus developed during the mid-1800s as a farming settlement. In the summer months, many farmers would take a break from working the land and spend their days fishing, while their wives and children enjoyed the magnificent beaches. Fish were plentiful, and by the 1880s, many families had moved closer to the coast to make a living from the ocean.

The name was shortened to Hermanus in 1902, and by the mid-1950s, the town had grown from a small fishing village into a popular seaside holiday destination.
