Some might know that I worked at Caroline's Fine Wines in Tokai a few years ago, somewhere around 2015/16. What you might not know is that Caroline Rillema and husband, Ray Kilian, own a small 3.5 ha farm in Baardskeerdersbos, near Gansbaai and Elim on the Southern Cape coast. They were pioneers in the area in 2003, following on the heels of Lomond Estate, situated 10km away. Their vineyard of only 1.86 ha containing Sauvignon Blanc and just 8 rows of Semillon, was planted in 2004. Whilst the viticulture is done by Caroline and Ray, the grapes are crushed and vinified by Dirk Human of Black Oystercatcher.
I have wanted to stock Caroline's wine for a long time and after chatting with her a few weeks ago, I eventually ordered a few cases!
Here are Caroline’s Tasting Notes:
It displays the distinctive Cape Agulhas characteristics of lean raciness with great purity and energy. The Sauvignon Blanc is chiselled and grassy with hints of fig and lime zest. The Semillon adds a dimension of yellow fruits, palate weight and softens the edges. For those who like that cold climate clarity but love a Sauvignon slightly richer, this is the wine for them. Matured in seasoned barriques for one year. It will mature beautifully in bottle until 2030.
Food Pairing:
Complex enough to accompany a range of foods. Try it with a classic Caesar salad, grilled Yellowtail or chicken baked in the oven with rosemary and green olives.
4.5* in Platter’s Guide 2023.

About Us
Have you ever heard about a great wine but could never find a bottle for yourself (to share with friends, of course)? Well, the team at Wine & Company do all the hard work for you! We visit wine farms and attend tastings to find, taste, and then stock wine from the smaller Estates and independent winemakers who buy grapes and produce outstanding wine under their own labels – much the same as the French negociants have been doing for centuries. Given that these winemakers make wine in such small quantities, sometimes just a single barrel, their wine will never be found on the shelves of the major retailers, but only in specialist shops like Wine & Company on High Street, Hermanus.
In addition to the great selection of well-known wines and MCC's, we also stock local craft gin and beer, French Champagne, Belgian Ales as well as whisky and other spirits. Wine & Company (established in 1998 by Bartho Eksteen) has a well-earned reputation for stocking hard-to-find small-batch wines and we strive to continue this great tradition. If you purchase a bottle of wine from us and it is faulty we will gladly replace the bottle and return the faulty wine to the winemaker.
Feel free to contact Wine & Company if you need a particular wine and we will do our best to source it for you. We are also able to ship wine locally and to most countries so do ask about international shipping.
