Now in Stock: Rebel Rebel!
Kayleigh Hattingh’s day job is assistant winemaker at Kaapzicht and fortunately for us she has time to make her own RebelRebel wines too! We currently have the Pinotage PetNat and Syrah on our shelves, and here are her Tasting Notes:
REBEL REBEL METHODE ANCESTRALE 2022: The Pinotage grapes were crushed and destemmed before 2 hour maceration and pressing. Spontaneous fermentation in tank and bottled with minimal intervention then aged for 6 months on lees before dégorgement.
This fun and vibrant Pinotage "pet-nat" has notes of raspberry, cranberries, sweet cherries, and pomegranate. The mousse is fine, but with lots of energy, and is alive with texture and natural acidity, best served 10 - 13 °C. This wine is unfiltered and may have some natural sediment which is harmless.
W.O. Bottelary, Stellenbosch. Vines planted in 2011, harvested 7 March 2022 at 22.2⁰B. Bottled 11 April 2022 and dégorgement on 11 November 2022. Alc 13%; RS 2.0g/L; TA 5.0g/L; VA 0.36g/L; pH 3.38
REBEL REBEL SYRAH 2021: The Syrah fruit was 100% whole berry, eight days spontaneously fermented on the skins then gently pressed to a maximum pressure of 0.8kPa. There was minimal intervention during 15 months ageing in 500L French oak barrels before bottling unfiltered.
This refined Syrah has notes of dark fruits, anise, olive tapenade and black peppercorns and the palate is restrained, focused and seamless with polished freshness, fine texture and natural acidity. Best served between 16 and 18 °C. If consuming this wine within the first 3 years after bottling, decanting will greatly benefit the wine.
W.O. Bottelary, Stellenbosch. Vines planted in 2001, harvested on 12 February 2021 at 22.2⁰B. Bottled 2 September 2022. Alc 12.95%; RS 2.3g/L; TA 5.8g/L; VA 0.68g/L; pH 3.49.
And WineMag’s Christian Eedes’ Tasting Note for the Rebel Rebel Syrah 2021… From a block situated on decomposed gravel at 320m above sea level and very exposed to the wind. Whole-berry fermentation before 15 months of maturation in older 500-litre barrels. Red and black berries plus subtle notes of fynbos, floral perfume and pepper on the nose while the palate has lovely purity of fruit, bright acidity and fine yet not unassertive tannins, the finish nicely dry. Great structure and balance, quietly insistant rather than hard-hitting. Alc: 12.8%. CE’s rating: 94/100.

About Us
Have you ever heard about a great wine but could never find a bottle for yourself (to share with friends, of course)? Well, the team at Wine & Company do all the hard work for you! We visit wine farms and attend tastings to find, taste, and then stock wine from the smaller Estates and independent winemakers who buy grapes and produce outstanding wine under their own labels – much the same as the French negociants have been doing for centuries. Given that these winemakers make wine in such small quantities, sometimes just a single barrel, their wine will never be found on the shelves of the major retailers, but only in specialist shops like Wine & Company on High Street, Hermanus.
In addition to the great selection of well-known wines and MCC's, we also stock local craft gin and beer, French Champagne, Belgian Ales as well as whisky and other spirits. Wine & Company (established in 1998 by Bartho Eksteen) has a well-earned reputation for stocking hard-to-find small-batch wines and we strive to continue this great tradition. If you purchase a bottle of wine from us and it is faulty we will gladly replace the bottle and return the faulty wine to the winemaker.
Feel free to contact Wine & Company if you need a particular wine and we will do our best to source it for you. We are also able to ship wine locally and to most countries so do ask about international shipping.
