Now in Stock - La Brune!
Here’s a reminder that with access to The Valley currently almost non-existent from all directions, we are helping the Bosman Hermanus guys by being their ‘Tasting Room in Town’ and have some of their Hemel en Aarde wines available to taste (and purchase) in our shop. Please do stop in to taste their wines… and with the Overberg still coming to grips with the damage from the recent storm Malu Lambert has also written an article on Jancis Robinson’s website which is free to read here.
Now in Stock - La Brune!
After 11 years at Eikendal in Stellenbosch, Nico Grobler is making wine under his own La Brune label, with fruit sourced from the Elgin area. He says that, “A belief in minimum intervention and traditional Burgundian winemaking methods are used to preserve the profile of the terroir. Custom made Burgundian barrels from the forest Pierre du Bourgogne made by Bruno Lorenzon, together with Nico, are used for the maturation process. Careful aging in bottle before release, allows the wine to find its inner peace.” This range is always hard to find and we are chuffed to have them on our shelf. Here are WineMag’s Christian Eedes’ Tasting Notes:
La Brune Chardonnay 2022: Grapes from Lothian exclusively from clone 95. 10% MLF. Matured for 12 months in 228-litre barrels, 25% new. The nose shows lemon with notes of blossom, nuttiness, oatmeal, a hint of spice and reduction in the background. The palate has impressive depth of fruit for a wine with an alcohol of just 13% – power and presence but not overblown. Pleasing texture and well-integrated acidity before a pithy finish. Plenty of detail but quite Old World in the sense of not being overtly fruity. Christian Eedes’ rating: 95/100.
La Brune Pinot Noir 2022: Grapes from own plantings, 60% clone 115 for power and richness, 25% clone 113 for earthiness and chalky tannins and 15% clone 459 for fruit. 50% whole-bunch fermentation. Matured for 11 months in 228-litre barrels, 25% new. Initially aroma associations are quite dark – black cherry, violets, earth, spice and some smoky reduction but raspberry, herbs and tea leaf emerge with time in glass. The palate is dense with fresh acidity and crunchy tannins – neither too lean nor too plush. Alcohol: 12.5%. Christian Eedes’ rating: 94/100.

About Us
Have you ever heard about a great wine but could never find a bottle for yourself (to share with friends, of course)? Well, the team at Wine & Company do all the hard work for you! We visit wine farms and attend tastings to find, taste, and then stock wine from the smaller Estates and independent winemakers who buy grapes and produce outstanding wine under their own labels – much the same as the French negociants have been doing for centuries. Given that these winemakers make wine in such small quantities, sometimes just a single barrel, their wine will never be found on the shelves of the major retailers, but only in specialist shops like Wine & Company on High Street, Hermanus.
In addition to the great selection of well-known wines and MCC's, we also stock local craft gin and beer, French Champagne, Belgian Ales as well as whisky and other spirits. Wine & Company (established in 1998 by Bartho Eksteen) has a well-earned reputation for stocking hard-to-find small-batch wines and we strive to continue this great tradition. If you purchase a bottle of wine from us and it is faulty we will gladly replace the bottle and return the faulty wine to the winemaker.
Feel free to contact Wine & Company if you need a particular wine and we will do our best to source it for you. We are also able to ship wine locally and to most countries so do ask about international shipping.
