"Autumn in the Overberg"
With our mornings starting off a bit darker, a bit of a chill in the evenings and the first cold fronts already passing through, it would seem that winter is definitely around the corner. Fortunately for us in the Overberg, our winters are quite mild and we don't have those freezing temperatures that some other parts of South Africa endure.
Along with cooking comfort food like pasta and hearty stews, we tend to drink more red wine when the temperature drops and there are many great local reds to choose from, at all price points!
This Weekend's Tasting
We will be tasting the 2019 Meerlust Red this weekend. This is a 'Bordeaux-style' red blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, aged in French oak barrels for 17 months.
Meerlust Red
2019 Meerlust Red: The wine has an intense, dark purple colour with a violet rim. Bright and vivacious in the glass, very youthful. An expressive nose with powerful cassis, plum, exotic spice and hints of floral aromas. On the palate the wine is medium bodied with intense flavours of crushed black fruit, cassis, vanilla and dark chocolate. The tannins are very soft and silky with fresh acidity and a focused, linear flavour profile, ending with a persistent and long lasting aftertaste.
The Meerlust Red 2019 is a blend of 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot.

About Us
Have you ever heard about a great wine but could never find a bottle for yourself (to share with friends, of course)? Well, the team at Wine & Company do all the hard work for you! We visit wine farms and attend tastings to find, taste, and then stock wine from the smaller Estates and independent winemakers who buy grapes and produce outstanding wine under their own labels – much the same as the French negociants have been doing for centuries. Given that these winemakers make wine in such small quantities, sometimes just a single barrel, their wine will never be found on the shelves of the major retailers, but only in specialist shops like Wine & Company on High Street, Hermanus.
In addition to the great selection of well-known wines and MCC's, we also stock local craft gin and beer, French Champagne, Belgian Ales as well as whisky and other spirits. Wine & Company (established in 1998 by Bartho Eksteen) has a well-earned reputation for stocking hard-to-find small-batch wines and we strive to continue this great tradition. If you purchase a bottle of wine from us and it is faulty or you are not satisfied with the quality, we will gladly replace the bottle and return the faulty wine to the winemaker.
