Wine & Co, Hermanus - labels, people, and great wine...
"Pretty labels, good people, great wine"
The Cravens prefer a hands-off approach in their winemaking, focusing much more of their efforts in the vineyards during the year to ensure the highest quality fruit possible comes in to the winery at harvest time. Jeanine and Mick Craven have been making their single vineyard / single varietal wines since 2013, and the 2020 releases are the first to have been made in their very own cellar. Just as before, these are great wines, made by good people, and we are very happy to have them on our shelves. The pretty labels are paintings and sketches which beautifully depict the actual vineyards.
This Weekend's Tasting
Every year on 14 April the Tannat grape is celebrated as what is Uruguay’s most planted variety. To join in, we will be tasting the 2019 Piekenierskloof Tannat this weekend.
An opaque colour hints towards the concentrated nose of black and blueberries that opens up after the first swirl. This is complemented by dark chocolate and charry oak on the palate and completed by a soirée of high quality, ripe tannins.
Come and taste what the Tannat fuss is about!
Piekenierskloof Tannat
2019 Piekenierskloof Tannat: The Tannat is vinified from a single bush vine vineyard on a north-facing slope on the farm Heidedal. Well known in Uruguay, which is Tannats second home after Madiran in Southwest France, it is famous for its intense blueberry flavour, similar to that of Cabernet Sauvignon. It ripens earlier though and is much more drought-resistant, making it a good contender for the name ‘Piekenierskloof’s little Cabernet’.
Winemaking: Grapes are handpicked and cold-soaked for 24 hours. Fermentation is initiated with selected yeast strains and is kept under 26°C. This wine was fermented in 3000L French oak barrels where the grape cap is punched down 4 times per day for maximum extraction. Fermented dry on the skins and pressed off to barrel for malo-lactic fermentation. The wine is racked for maturation of 18 months in 30% new and 70% second fill and older 225L French oak barrels.

About Us
Have you ever heard about a great wine but could never find a bottle for yourself (to share with friends, of course)? Well, the team at Wine & Company do all the hard work for you! We visit wine farms and attend tastings to find, taste, and then stock wine from the smaller Estates and independent winemakers who buy grapes and produce outstanding wine under their own labels – much the same as the French negociants have been doing for centuries. Given that these winemakers make wine in such small quantities, sometimes just a single barrel, their wine will never be found on the shelves of the major retailers, but only in specialist shops like Wine & Company on High Street, Hermanus.
In addition to the great selection of well-known wines and MCC's, we also stock local craft gin and beer, French Champagne, Belgian Ales as well as whisky and other spirits. Wine & Company (established in 1998 by Bartho Eksteen) has a well-earned reputation for stocking hard-to-find small-batch wines and we strive to continue this great tradition. If you purchase a bottle of wine from us and it is faulty or you are not satisfied with the quality, we will gladly replace the bottle and return the faulty wine to the winemaker.
Feel free to contact Wine & Company if you need a particular wine and we will do our best to source it for you. We are also able to ship wine locally and to most countries so do ask about international shipping.
