Q: WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?
A: Being able to tell stories through wine.
This response is exactly what makes Pieter Walser such an interesting guy and a great winemaker. He does not own any vineyards, but manages a few and buys grapes from many, in fact in the 2020 harvest they picked 165 tons from about 80 vineyards; 35 different varietals - bottling well over 40 different wines. Each wine and its label has a story behind it, and Pieter is in his element when telling those stories. This year we managed to get a few on our shelves:
Pseudonym is made from a small 71 -year old vineyard. It grows in a little valley into the mountain in Darling - 100% Cinsaut.
Vineyard: Single old-vine, unirrigated bush vines in the Darling Mountain. Planted in decomposed granite 204 meter above sea-level on an East facing slope.
Winemaking: The grapes were picked at optimal ripeness and cooled overnight to 4 degrees celsius. The next morning the grapes were hand sorted and partially de-stemmed. It fermented in open top fermenters, a combination of destemmed grapes and whole bunches. The juice underwent spontaneous fermentation and stayed on the skins for as long as possible. Aged in older oak for 8 months, blended and bottled.
Amount of Bottles Produced: 542.
Kortpad Kaaptoe 2-point-0 100% whole bunch fermented Fernao Pires a.k.a Maria Gomez.
Vineyard: Single old-vine, unirrigated bushvines in the Swartland flatlands. Sandy topsoil with “Koffieklip” subsoil 100 meter above sea-level.
Winemaking: The grapes were picked at different ripeness levels in 4 pickings and cooled overnight to 4 degrees celsius. The next morning the grapes were handled in different ways. Some fermented as whole clusters and some as de-stemmed on the skin fermentation. Fermented and aged in French oak (nothing new) and amphora. Deep winter the wine received sulphur, it's only additive. 10 months on the leese, blended and bottled.
Amount of Bottles Produced: 682.

Pat Bird a 100% Stellenbosch Petit Verdot.
Vineyard: Single vineyard trellis Petit Verdot - 254m above sea-level NE facing slope.
Winemaking: The grapes were picked at optimal ripeness and cooled overnight to 4 degrees celsius. The next morning the grapes were destemmed to open top fermenters. The juice underwent spontaneous fermentation and stayed on the skins for as long as possible. Pressed into older French oak small barrels, 18 months in barrel, blended and bottled.

The BOMB a limited production from Stellenbosch grapes.
A heavyweight Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc/Petit Verdot blend only 14.5% alc. but still with a very large frame. Ripe Helderberg fruit, super extracted yet balanced. About Us
Have you ever heard about a great wine but could never find a bottle for yourself (to share with friends, of course)? Well, the team at Wine & Company do all the hard work for you! We visit wine farms and attend tastings to find, taste, and then stock wine from the smaller Estates and independent winemakers who buy grapes and produce outstanding wine under their own labels – much the same as the French negociants have been doing for centuries. Given that these winemakers make wine in such small quantities, sometimes just a single barrel, their wine will never be found on the shelves of the major retailers, but only in specialist shops like Wine & Company on High Street, Hermanus.
In addition to the great selection of well-known wines and MCC's, we also stock local craft gin and beer, French Champagne, Belgian Ales as well as whisky and other spirits. Wine & Company (established in 1998 by Bartho Eksteen) has a well-earned reputation for stocking hard-to-find small-batch wines and we strive to continue this great tradition. If you purchase a bottle of wine from us and it is faulty we will gladly replace the bottle and return the faulty wine to the winemaker.
Feel free to contact Wine & Company if you need a particular wine and we will do our best to source it for you. We are also able to ship wine locally and to most countries so do ask about international shipping.
Thank you for your support - stay safe - see you soon!
