Creating SMART Goals

We always say create SMART goals for your team, but how do we do it?

SMART goals are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. When setting SMART goals, it's essential to ensure that your objectives meet each of these criteria. Here's a breakdown of each concept:

Specific (S):

Clearly define what you want to accomplish.
Ask yourself: What do I want to achieve? Why is it important? How will I achieve it?
Example: Instead of a vague goal like "Improve sales," make it specific like "Increase monthly sales by 15% in the next quarter by targeting a new customer segment."

Measurable (M):

Establish concrete criteria for measuring progress.
Ask yourself: How will I track and measure my progress? How will I know when the goal is accomplished?
Example: Instead of saying "get more clients," make it measurable like "get 5 new clients in the next months by following a specific market research approach."

Achievable (A):

Ensure that the goal is realistic and attainable.
Ask yourself: Is the goal reasonable and within reach? Do I have the resources and capabilities to achieve it?
Example: If you have never run before, setting a goal to run a marathon in a month might not be achievable. Instead, start with a goal like running 5 kilometers in two months.

Relevant (R):

Make sure the goal aligns with your overall objectives and is worthwhile.
Ask yourself: Does this goal matter? Is it the right time to pursue this goal?
Example: If your overarching business goal is to increase customer satisfaction, a relevant goal might be "Implement a customer feedback system to address and improve service quality."

Time-bound (T):

Set a specific timeframe for achieving the goal.
Ask yourself: When will I achieve this goal? What can I do today, this week, and this month to move closer to my goal?
Example: Instead of saying "Write a book," make it time-bound like "Complete the first draft of the book within six months by writing 500 words every day."

Applying the SMART criteria ensures that your goals are well-defined, realistic, and manageable, increasing the likelihood of successful achievement.
