8 February 2025 Hike: Flower Valley

Hello, fellow hikers! I hope you've all recovered from our recent adventure in Tesselaarsdal and are excited about the upcoming February hikes. This month, we have two fantastic trails lined up: Flower Valley on February 8th and Fernkloof on February 22nd.

Flower Valley Hike – February 8, 2025

This scenic hike takes place on the Grootbos Foundation Conservancy, with kind permission from Dave and Sean Privet, Mike Fabricius, and Christhoff Longland.

What to Expect:

Total Distance: 7.5 km

Terrain: A combination of steep inclines and tranquil forest paths

First Half: A challenging 2 km steep ascent on a jeep track leading to Witvoetskloof Road

Second Half: A shaded descent through pristine forest, featuring stinkhout and wit els trees, offering a refreshing atmosphere

Highlights: Stunning views, lush fynbos, and crystal-clear mountain water to cool down

Meeting Details:

Time: 08:00 AM

Location: Flower Valley Offices (Google Maps Pin here)

Leader: Mike (carrying the medical pouch)

Breakfast Stop: 1.5 km before the end—bring snacks and drinks!

We aim for an early start to beat the heat on the steep ascent.

Essential Summer Hiking Precautions

With summer in full swing, it's crucial to be well-prepared for the heat. During our last hike, we observed a few cases of heat distress and cramps, so let's take extra precautions:

Carry plenty of water and hydrating drinks.

Pack ice bottles and wet hand towels to cool down.

Wear hats, sunblock, and good hiking shoes.

Be mindful of muscle cramps and take necessary preventive measures.
