Architects in Betty's Bay

As humans, we’re suckers for beauty. This is true across the board; in people, pets, homes, food and fashion, we gravitate towards things that are pleasing to the eye. When we encounter a gorgeous place, it makes sense that we fall head over heels in love with it, and want to return again and again. If you’ve spent any amount of time in the Overberg, then you know how this spectacular region gets under your skin. While some people are content to visit occasionally, others prefer to make this part of the country their permanent residence or at least their home away from home. Some even open businesses in Betty’s Bay!

Anyone fortunate enough to live or have a holiday spot in Betty’s Bay has likely made use of building and construction professionals in the area. These enterprises have a particularly unique challenge in this small town, as the area is largely a nature reserve. This means that houses and other structures generally have to adhere to strict building codes in order to preserve the natural habitat. Endemic species of fynbos, birds and insect life call this region their home and locals protect them by considering how their houses are designed and built.

Another important consideration of architects in Betty’s Bay is how to provide the best view, with the most light, without starting a generational war with the neighbours. Building up often ruins the scenery for other homeowners, and there are ways to maximise on the surrounding sights without being obtrusive. Homes built in coastal regions also have to bear the brunt of fierce weather. Baking sunshine gives way to tremendous storms, and the wind can be relentless, so house designs need to take this into account. When planning a home in Betty’s Bay, people also tend to opt for structures that require minimal maintenance, by avoiding materials that rust or corrode in the salty environment.

There’s a South African saying that goes “Dis lekker by die see”, which is an understatement that means “it’s nice at the seaside”. When you spend time in the coastal parts of the Overberg, known as the Cape Whale Coast, you’ll agree wholeheartedly. With all kinds of beaches, from fine, white sandy stretches to smooth pebbly coves, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the gorgeous surroundings. Whether you’re a lucky fish who lives here permanently, or are simply coming out for a short, but much-needed getaway, this coastline will soon be permanently entrenched in your heart.
