Non-profit organisations in Betty's Bay

The Overberg is known throughout the world as a place of spectacular beauty. This Western Cape region is home to an incredible variety of plant and animal life, much of which is found nowhere else on the planet. In addition, many of the diverse ecosystems in this area are endangered and, as a result, are now protected habitats where fynbos and birdlife, even marine life, can flourish. In terms of eco-tourism, this makes the region a must-see. However, there’s more to this scenic part of South Africa than just splendour and beauty. There’s a sense of community amongst businesses in the Overberg that stays with you long after you leave.

It should come as no surprise that there are plenty of NGO and non-profits in Betty’s Bay. This moody jewel in the Overberg crown is home to an astonishing selection of initiatives which aim to improve life on Earth in a range of spheres. Some focus on uplifting local business owners, and supporting industries which feed back into the area, making them an integral part of this seaside community. From insolvency lawyers to pro-bono legal advisors, there are numerous NPO efforts in the surrounds.

Other Betty’s Bay non-profit organisations focus on preserving the local wildlife that thrives here. The penguin sanctuary, marine protected waters and endangered fynbos in the area are all on the radar. Understandably, residents feel strongly that their environment should be safe from unchecked construction and development. To this end, there are large areas in Betty’s Bay that are legally protected, and left to grow unhindered. With such a tranquil natural atmosphere, it makes sense that community members here also see the value in letting young people experience the largely untouched environment. As a result, numerous education and development initiatives find a happy home in this peaceful town.

Sometimes it’s necessary to get a change of scenery in order to put some perspective into your life. When you’re surrounded by towering mountains and sweeping ocean vistas, it’s hard not to feel a little insignificant in the grand scheme of things. If it’s a beautiful wake-up call that you need, then the Cape Whale Coast is the right place to be. With plenty of wonders to experience, and loads of opportunities to meet friendly local residents, this part of the world is a very special place indeed, and is dear in the hearts of just about everyone who visits.
