Let's Talk Herbs and Spices
Not too sure which herbs and spices to use? Here is a brief look at the most common herbs and spice...
Moving to Hermanus four years ago, I came across many people who like me, grew up in KwaZulu – Natal and were exposed to the wonderful world of Durban Indian curries. Although there are restaurants that sell Indian curries in Hermanus, it is sometimes difficult to find the correct spice ingredients to create those special dishes that I remember whilst growing up in Durban.....going to the Indian market early on a Saturday morning and wandering through the never ending rows of spices and herbs, buying specially mixed curry powder from Mrs. Reddy’s stall to send to our relatives in Cape Town, the relatives who always complained that the curry powder in Cape Town could never quite match up to Mrs. Reddy’s Durban mix...
It was then that I started to turn my love for curries into a small business venture, creating mild, medium, and hot dishes for people who, like me, desired that authentic Indian flavour. It has been a positive experience to be able to produce a dish that is not only tasty and satisfying but also brings back those memories of observing my mother create delicious meals, at the same time learning the art of home cooking at an early age.
Our aim at “Busy Kitchen” is to create those dishes for customers who have experienced or would like to experience the real taste of Indian curries, made with the patience and care, that turns an ordinary meal into a positive memory, using quality ingredients, passion and lots of TLC and yet is still affordable for all.
Our spices are carefully blended, and we use only quality cuts of meat, fresh vegetables and herbs to allow the real flavour of our dishes to be experienced. Medium and hot curries are served with rice or soft butter rotis and come in single portions. Curry bunny chows are available in quarter and half sizes, and include vegetarian bunny chows (sugar beans/mixed beans) for customers who prefer vegetarian dishes. Vetkoek and mince are made to order. Plain rotis can be bought in bulk and frozen for up to two months.
Our menu is growing at a steady pace, and we have now branched out to include savouries and sweet treats according to our customer’s requests.
We create thin-based pizzas using mozzarella and cheddar cheeses. Our three main pizza choices are “Chili Chicken” with chillies, cilanto and barbecue sauce; “Bacon and Pineapple” with feta cheese and Italian herbs; and “Vegetarian” with mushrooms, olives, peppers and rocket/spinach. Available pizzas are small, medium and large.

Our cocktail and regular sized samoosas have chicken, mince and vegetarian fillings and are fried to a golden-brown crispy finish. Bulk orders for frozen samoosas are accepted. These may be frozen and stored for later use.
Our sweet treats include traditional Sunday coconut koesisters, strawberry jam and cream tea scones, chocolate chip pancakes, brownies of various flavours and refreshing lemon and coconut bars.
Our brownies are made from scratch with lots of chocolates, walnuts, mint, coconut and caramel and we use only freshly squeezed lemon juice in the making of our lemon bars. Each brownie and lemon bar is individually wrapped to seal in freshness and flavour.
Bulk brownie orders are accepted, provided an order is placed at least forty-eight hours in advance.
No pre-mix ingredients are used in our products.
