Now in Stock - Afrikaans!

Part of the Jean Engelbrecht portfolio (along with Stellenbosch Reserve, Rust en Vrede, Guardian Peak, Donkiesbaai and Cirrus), the pair of Afrikaans wines are one of their smaller production runs which is not always available as they usually sell out quickly. They are made to be accessible yet well-structured - a red and white wine for every occasion, without complication, without pretension. Made for sharing, here are their notes…

Afrikaans White Vol V (65% Chenin Blanc, 35% Chardonnay):

Winemaking: Grapes are sourced from Stellenbosch producers in Devon Valley and Polkadraai, as well as from the Piekenierskloof. In Stellenbosch, the cooling influence of the south-eastern and proximity to the ocean maintain fresh acidity. In the Piekenierskloof, old vines and sandy soils bring intensity and perfume to the wine. Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay grapes are whole bunch pressed. They must undergo a slow, cool fermentation process in a combination of vessels, including new and seasoned oak barrels. After fermentation, the wine is matured on the fine lees for 6 months for texture and mouthfeel. 15% new oak is used.

Tasting Note: Bright aromas of ruby grapefruit, elderflower and nectarine create intrigue on the nose. Medium bodied with a backbone of peach and citrus, and succulent acidity to balance the fruitiness that fills the palate.

Afrikaans Red Vol V (80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cinsault):

Winemaking: Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from Stellenbosch while the Cinsault comes from the Piekenierskloof. All the grapes are destemmed, crushed and then fermented in open top fermenters with regular punch downs up to four times per day. After maceration, the wine is pressed off the skins into 500L seasoned French oak barrels for 12 months of maturation.

Tasting Note: Lively aromas of red currant and cherry jump out of the glass, before revealing cassis, nutmeg, and hint of tobacco. The palate shows fresh acidity with fine yet firm tannins from the Cabernet, tempered by the juicy red fruit flavours from the Cinsault. Combined, the two varieties form a mouth filling fusion of mixed berries, chocolate, and pink peppercorn. Friendly, approachable, and infinitely drinkable.

About Us

Have you ever heard about a great wine but could never find a bottle for yourself (to share with friends, of course)? Well, the team at Wine & Company do all the hard work for you! We visit wine farms and attend tastings to find, taste, and then stock wine from the smaller Estates and independent winemakers who buy grapes and produce outstanding wine under their own labels – much the same as the French negociants have been doing for centuries. Given that these winemakers make wine in such small quantities, sometimes just a single barrel, their wine will never be found on the shelves of the major retailers, but only in specialist shops like Wine & Company on High Street, Hermanus.

In addition to the great selection of well-known local wines and MCC's, we also stock craft gin and beer, imported wines, French Champagne, Belgian Ales as well as whisky and other spirits. Wine & Company (established in 1998 by Bartho Eksteen) has a well-earned reputation for stocking hard-to-find small-batch wines and we strive to continue this great tradition. If you purchase a bottle of wine from us and it is faulty we will gladly replace the bottle and return the faulty wine to the winemaker.

Feel free to contact Wine & Company if you need a particular wine and we will do our best to source it for you. We are also able to ship wine locally and to most countries so do ask about international shipping.
