A Team of Magicians?
If you want your team to imagine up something out of thin air, perhaps you should announce vacancies for magicians.
In the real world, people need to be given the necessary resources in order to generate results. To expect otherwise would be like running a slave camp.
Productivity will suffer if you do not provide the training, tools, and resources to get the job done. And I am in no way implying that they should not apply their minds.
To reach the conclusion that a team member or even business unit has failed in delivering results, you have to give a reasonably long rope and provide the necessary support. Also, be open to the fact that the same results may be achieved by following a different process. Clients that have worked with me will know that I have a passion for performance management.
Many times, time is the one resource that you are seemingly unable to give to a team member who is not yet punching at their weight level, still, you must view your people as more than just the factors of production.
You must view them as people with whom you should be willing to make an investment, even if they don't end up the way you have wished.
